Modern Classic Style Over 50

Fall and Winter lend themselves to classic fashion. A timeless sweater here. A tasteful tartan plaid there. A scarf, a bag and some jewelry pull the outfit together. You’ll never go wrong when you step out of the house in classic fashion. You’ll look and feel sophisticated and confident.

So what makes this “modern” classic style? While the tops, blazers and sweaters are tailored in a more classic, timeless fashion, the jeans and pants are cut in a currently modern way. The style is relaxed, simple and natural while still looking refined and polished - not stiff or frumpy. “Modern classic” allows for freedom to follow some trends with jewelry, handbags and other accessories to give a more updated effect while still building around staple pieces you plan to keep for a long time. In this collection, though I’ve shown some sweaters and shirts buttoned up, choosing to leave some unbuttoned would certainly create a more relaxed and modern vibe where desired.

This style is generally flattering for women over 50, as its tailored lines help define the feminine silhouette while skimming, rather than clinging, to the body. Classic fashion also lends itself to layering, making it versatile and adaptable for whatever the day or the temperatures bring. Since I live in a very cold climate (Minnesota) where we’ve already seen temps of 24 degrees Fahrenheit in mid-November, I’ve chosen some warmer options. While there are certainly times to focus solely on the practicality of staying warm, like when it’s -20 with 30 mph wind gusts, (yes, that’s a real thing), I find that most times it’s easy to be both warm and stylish.
