One great thing about being in the “over 50” era is the joy of seeing fashion from days-gone-by become “new” again. I’m noticing that pastels and florals are making a comeback, and admittedly, it reminds me so much of my beautiful and loving mom, who wore pastel pantsuits when it was a novelty for women to do so. I even specifically recall light blue and light pink pantsuits with satin or silk blouses and the smell of her perfume. She was very feminine, but she was also tough as nails in the best possible way. So when I see the pastel pantsuits making a resurgence, my day is warmed by the nostalgia of it all. I also laugh a bit, as I remember her telling me that in the late 1970s to early 80s, a man in our small farming community had actually asked her if she thought she was a man because seemingly only men should wear a pantsuit. Nevermind that the suits she wore were beautiful and feminine or that she didn’t give one care whether other people approved or not. And never mind that women did wear pants in the 1940s for sure, and even the 1920s-30s, so I don’t really get that man’s logic. But I digress.
I also recall the more sporty, athletic side of my mom, who also donned outfits with an array of sunset colors or earthy hues in the 1970s and 80s. And here is a good time to brag that a famous college basketball coach, who happened to by my mom’s former gym teacher in the mid 1960s, had once called her the best female athlete he had ever known, at least at that point in his life. But that’s beside the point.
So in that spirit, I hope you enjoy these beautiful classic outfits, and if you’re over 50, I hope they evoke a bit of nostalgia.
If you’re tired of following trends and spending a bunch of money to revamp your wardrobe, consider finding some classic staples that stand the test of time. Look for the timeless pieces that easily mix and match to create new outfits and are easily updated with perhaps only a new bag or earrings in a trendier color.
When choosing classic summer colors, I personally think of navy blue, light blue, Kelly or emerald green, red, yellow, white and black. That said, some people prefer lighter tints or tones for summer, or those colors don’t suit them. It’s more important to complement your skin, hair and eyes than it is to follow someone else’s idea of the must-have wardrobe colors, so though I’ve attached some classic summer outfit ideas, feel free to use these as templates and select the version/color of the item that best suits you. (I usually - but not always - try to limit the number of main colors in each outfit to three or less, unless the clothing item itself is multicolored.)
Furthermore, choose the neckline or sleeve length that best flatters you.
Where I live, we just got another 15 inches of snow last week (the middle of March). However, people are vacationing in warmer climates and looking ahead to summer! Soon, we’ll feel the warmth of the sun and spend hours outdoors in the fresh air. Now’s the time to find some easy-breezy outfits that are not only flattering, but also comfortable. (If you missed my Spring Break blog, there are a few adorable looks there as well.)
Remember to use the principles we’ve discussed before, such as accurate sizing using the size chart and aiming for clothes that skim the body rather than cling. If needed, utilize the partial shirt tuck to create a waistline. I’ve chosen fairly streamlined, non-bulky sandal options to keep you light on your feet.
Enjoy the warmer weather in style!
And just like that, we’re already longing for Spring! If you have an upcoming vacation or Spring Break trip to pack for, I’ve got you covered!
You’ll recognize a few of my previous midlife midsection tips, as well as some classic pieces that never go out of style. I’ve chosen breathable and lightweight fabrics, so looking good won’t come at the price of comfort and relaxation. You’ll look great and feel fabulous! Have a spectacular trip!
One of the most common problem areas for women over 50 is the midlife midsection. We can maximize our style choices to boost appearance and confidence by making tasteful wardrobe and styling choices that comfortably and naturally highlight our favorite assets and camouflage our least favorites. I’ve pulled together some great looks that do just that!
I have many happy memories of Christmas celebrations with my family. Among my favorites are those when all of us would pile into the church pew for the candlelight service; the guys in their dress trousers and sport coats, and we gals in our classic plaid skirts, cozy sweaters, or blazers. Over the years, the times changed and so did the styles, but Christmas is one of those seasons when timeless looks are always a great choice. I love that the fashion associated with many of my treasured Christmas memories is making a comeback! Here are a few outfit ideas I’ve put together for the holiday season. May your days be merry, bright and full of joy.
A timeless sweater here. A tasteful tartan plaid there. A scarf, a bag and some jewelry pull the outfit together. You’ll never go wrong when you step out of the house in classic fashion. You’ll look and feel sophisticated and confident. Find out what makes this “modern” and why it’s ideal for women over 50.
If you love the look of barrel jeans or wide leg crops but don’t have a clue how to wear them, I’ve got your back. And if you also live in a cold climate where it’s not an option to sport bare ankles in the Fall and Winter, you’re probably wondering, “what in the world do I wear for shoes?”
Great news! Sweater weather is here! There’s no easier closet staple than a well-chosen sweater. Comfortable and warm, a great sweater accentuates all the positives and helps disguise problem areas.
The holidays are drawing near, and it’s time to plan for your entryway decor. The first thing guests see as they pull up for your holiday celebration is your home’s entryway, so take a little time to make it inviting.
Luxury brands are revealing the high-end, premium looks that are trending for Fall. Here I offer up a more affordable way to achieve those looks without breaking your budget.
I’ll be 56 years old next month, and if your skin is “classic” 😉 like mine, you may have experienced a change in skin texture and a new problem finding products with the perfect balance. Speaking for myself, I found that products that didn’t hurt my eyes and lips tended to have poor spreadability and glow, while the ones that didn’t cause irritation seemed to be too greasy or sparkly to stay in place and look decent.
Take a queue from nature this season, and add some color to your Fall 2025 outfits! We can benefit so much from bringing color into our wardrobes - colors that give brightness to our skin and highlight our eye and hair color. After all, classic fashion doesn’t require limiting ourselves to only a handful of colors that may or may not flatter us. When we create ensembles of pieces that are cut to accentuate our positives, bring life to our features and tastefully harmonize together, we shine even more. So when you’re out enjoying the Fall scenery, take some fashion inspiration from the Fall colors.
Fall 2025 is here. Will you pull out your old flannel shirt for every outing or put your best foot forward?
I’ve been there. That moment of realization, when your previous wardrobe choices no longer flatter you.
