One great thing about being in the “over 50” era is the joy of seeing fashion from days-gone-by become “new” again. I’m noticing that pastels and florals are making a comeback, and admittedly, it reminds me so much of my beautiful and loving mom, who wore pastel pantsuits when it was a novelty for women to do so. I even specifically recall light blue and light pink pantsuits with satin or silk blouses and the smell of her perfume. She was very feminine, but she was also tough as nails in the best possible way. So when I see the pastel pantsuits making a resurgence, my day is warmed by the nostalgia of it all. I also laugh a bit, as I remember her telling me that in the late 1970s to early 80s, a man in our small farming community had actually asked her if she thought she was a man because seemingly only men should wear a pantsuit. Nevermind that the suits she wore were beautiful and feminine or that she didn’t give one care whether other people approved or not. And never mind that women did wear pants in the 1940s for sure, and even the 1920s-30s, so I don’t really get that man’s logic. But I digress.
I also recall the more sporty, athletic side of my mom, who also donned outfits with an array of sunset colors or earthy hues in the 1970s and 80s. And here is a good time to brag that a famous college basketball coach, who happened to by my mom’s former gym teacher in the mid 1960s, had once called her the best female athlete he had ever known, at least at that point in his life. But that’s beside the point.
So in that spirit, I hope you enjoy these beautiful classic outfits, and if you’re over 50, I hope they evoke a bit of nostalgia.
